Patience Rewarded: Agathon Delivers a Memorable Win at Carlisle

Some things in racing just take a little time—and today, patience was richly rewarded.

Ursa Major Racing had two runners heading to Carlisle, with May Blossom representing the Camacho team and Agathon lining up for Rebecca Menzies. Both were looking to build on their previous runs, and both gave their owners reason to be encouraged.

May Blossom: Solid Progress

May Blossom was first up over the minimum trip of 5 furlongs 182 yards. With the blinkers left off this time, the aim was to see a small step forward and a return to form. On a lightning-fast surface that didn’t suit her ideally, she had the tough task of coming from behind. Despite this, she stayed on gamely past several rivals to finish a respectable 6th, beaten just six and a half lengths.

This was a run full of promise—on ground with a bit more cut and the blinkers back on, there’s every reason to think she’ll be much closer next time out.

Agathon: Class and Character Shine Through

Later in the card, it was time for Agathon. A horse still learning his trade, he’s shown signs of immaturity in past runs—travelling well but struggling to find that final gear when it matters. Trainer Rebecca Menzies had shared her thoughts with owners beforehand, noting his inexperience and how he’s still figuring it all out when hitting the front.

Ridden confidently by David Allan, Agathon was settled in midfield before making a smooth move from three furlongs out. For a moment, it looked as though he might flatten out, but David timed it perfectly—pressing the button just as the penny dropped. Agathon responded superbly, powering past his rivals to win by three-quarters of a length and staying on strongly through the line.

A Victory That Means More

This wasn’t just a win—it was a big moment for the whole club. We’ve had more than our share of near-misses recently, with horses running big races but not quite getting their heads in front. This one was for all the patient owners and syndicate members who’ve stuck with the journey.

A special mention must go to our racing manager, Craig Talbot, whose sharp thinking made this win possible. With Joshua Des Flos sidelined through injury, Craig arranged a lease deal for Agathon—an option rarely offered in many racing syndicates. It’s a move that’s now proven a stroke of genius.

With a few strong chances still to come this week, we hope this victory marks the beginning of our countdown to 100 winners.
