Manager’s Thoughts – Saturday Runners & A Fond Farewell to a Legend

We’re set for a big day at Ursa Major with five runners declared across three tracks—Cartmel, Market Rasen, and Doncaster. While excitement is in the air, today also carries an emotional weight as we prepare to say goodbye to one of the yard’s most beloved warriors. Here’s the lowdown on each of our runners, alongside my thoughts on what lies ahead.

Cartmel

2.15 – INGENNIO

Trainer: Lizzie Quinlan | Jockey: Sean Quinlan

Ingennio returns to the track after a lengthy absence. He’s got plenty of weight to carry today, which won’t be easy, but he’s been working well at home and we’re hopeful of a positive showing. He’s drifted to an each-way price, and a finish in the top three would be a brilliant result on seasonal return. He’ll strip much fitter next time out, whatever happens today.

2.50 – ASHINGTON (pictured below)

Trainer: Mark Walford | Jockey: Becky Smith

This is a special one. Ashington—our club legend—lines up for what will be his final race. He won this contest last year and how fitting it would be if he could bow out by becoming Ursa Major’s 100th winner. It would be pure poetry. He’ll need to roll back the years today, but we know how much heart he has. No matter the result, he owes his owners absolutely nothing. He’s a huge favourite at Cornborough Manor and will remain a visible figure around the yard.

5.10 – RESTANDBETHANKFUL

Trainer: Lizzie Quinlan | Jockey: Sean Quinlan

Rocky returns following a wind operation and some time off for a back niggle. If he’s back to himself, he should be a major player in this grade. His performance at Kelso last year puts him right in the mix today if he can rediscover that form. The only concern is how the ground holds up if the rain hits hard.

Market Rasen

4.25 – PRINCE QUATTRO

Trainer: James Owen | Jockey: Alex Chadwick

Prince Quattro steps into a highly competitive race, drawn by the strong prize money on offer. He’s one of several last-time-out winners, but with Alex back in the saddle, we’re hopeful he can put up another bold display. He’s progressing nicely and should be right in the mix if things fall into place.

Doncaster

6.45 – LUMENBOURG

Trainer: Julie Camacho | Jockey: Ryan Sexton

Our final runner of the day might well be our best chance of success. Lumenbourg made a really promising debut for us when finishing third and has been in good order since. He looks to have a big opportunity here—provided the weather behaves. Rain would be a concern, but on form and feel, we’re going in confident.

A Day of Racing and Reflection

Today is about more than just winners. While we’re hopeful across the board, it’s Ashington who has our hearts. He’s carried the Ursa Major colours with pride and distinction. Retirement is richly deserved, and his presence at the yard will continue to lift spirits for years to come.

Good luck to all connections and thank you, as always, for your continued support.
