Manager’s Thoughts – Ashington – 7:42 Carlisle

The old boy Ashington is back in action this evening in the 7:42 at Carlisle, with Becky Smith taking the ride. At the time of writing, he’s currently priced up at 25/1, which feels a touch generous considering what he’s shown us recently.

The visor goes back on, which is a tried-and-tested aid for him, and we’re hopeful it helps sharpen him up again. Last time out, he wasn’t beaten all that far in what’s turned out to be a decent little contest – a few of those who finished around him that day have come out and won since, so the form has taken a boost. The handicapper has given him a small bit of relief too, nudging him down a pound, which could make all the difference in a race like this.

We’ll be riding him positively, and Becky knows how to get the best out of these seasoned types. From a mark of 60, we’re realistic – this isn’t a gimme – but if he gets into a rhythm early and travels well, there’s every chance he can run into the frame.

We’d love to see him reward his loyal followers with a big run. A top four or five finish is definitely achievable, and if things fall his way, who knows – he’s got the class in the locker when the mood takes him.

Fingers crossed for a bold show from one of the yard’s old favourites.
