Ursa Major Weekly Round-Up – 12 Runners, 100+ Owners, and a Tarlac Triumph!
It’s been a hugely busy and exciting week for everyone involved with Ursa Major Racing, with 12 runners out on track and over 100 owners joining us in person across the country. We experienced a real mix of highs, near misses, and a few moments of misfortune – but that’s racing! Here’s how the week unfolded:
🏇 Bank Holiday Monday: Five Runners, One Hard-Fought Second
Redcar saw three of our runners in action:
Kalganov (3:25): Back on track and showing great form. He stayed on powerfully to finish a close second – just bumping into one better on the day.
Jumeira Vision and Falcon Nine (5:45): A strong showing from both – Falcon Nine once again broke slowly but finished strongly, while Jumeira Vision ran another consistent race, finishing 5th, beaten just 1.25 lengths in a tight field.
Meanwhile, over at Huntingdon, Prince Quattro was sent off as the even-money favourite. He travelled sweetly and looked poised for victory – only to bump into the same rival who beat him last time. A gallant effort that just came up short.
At Cartmel, Glory and Honour returned from a break. While he didn’t show his usual zest, trainer Sam England is confident he’ll bounce back with a few tactical adjustments next time.
Wednesday Double Act at Cartmel
We teamed up with Mark Walford for a two-runner day:
Mr Sundancer kicked things off with a strong effort, despite some iffy jumping. He stayed on gamely to finish third. With a similar race to suit, a win doesn’t look far away.
Ashington, a real club favourite, showed his class in the prelims but didn’t find much when asked for his effort. Headgear is likely next time to help him focus – he owes us nothing and we’ll support him all the way.
🏆 Thursday Joy at Ripon & Carlisle
A big highlight came with Tarlac, trained by Katie Scott, who’s been brought along with patience and care. After a promising second at Hamilton, he stormed home under Joanna Mason with a sweeping late run to claim victory by half a length at Ripon. A well-deserved win for all involved!
At Carlisle, we had two more runners:
Northern Tempest, a 2-year-old debutant for Michael Dods, didn’t get the smoothest trip in a messy race but gained valuable experience for next time.
Straya travelled powerfully and looked the likely winner, but just like déjà vu, he found a little too much left in reserve. Katie has a few tricks up her sleeve to unlock his full potential.
Friday at Catterick – Progress & Frustration
Baby Rover was much improved at the stalls – a major step forward! Unfortunately, she fly-leapt on exit, giving away too much ground. She still finished within 4.25 lengths, showing the ability is there. A cleaner break and she’ll be right in the mix next time.
Agathon went off 9/4 favourite, and confidence was high. Travelling beautifully through the race, he was cruelly denied a clear run just as the button was about to be pushed. A frustrating watch, but his progress is clear and a plan is in place to see him closer soon.
Saturday at York – May Blossom Battles On
We wrapped up the week in style at the prestigious York Racecourse with May Blossom, trained by Julie Camacho and ridden by Group-winning jockey Saffie Osborne. Despite a troubled trip mid-race, she finished well and caught the eye of Racing TV pundits, who marked her as “one to watch.”
🎉 One Winner, Dozens of Memories
Only one winner on the board this week, but every runner returned home safe and sound – and that’s always the biggest result of all. From Redcar to York, our horses gave everything, and our owners showed up in force, with more than 100 attending live – a phenomenal achievement that captures the spirit of what Ursa Major Racing is all about.
We’re continuing to improve both the quality of horses and the ownership experience, and we’re proud of how far we’ve come. Thank you to all of our supporters for being part of this journey.
