Agathon Narrowly Denied in Brave Follow-Up Bid
Following his impressive win at Carlisle earlier in the week, Agathon returned to the track today under a quick turnaround, with David Allan once again taking the reins. Confidence was high in the camp, with conditions to suit and the team hopeful he could replicate his winning form despite the short recovery time.
Breaking sharply from the gates, Agathon settled beautifully behind the sole leader, traveling strongly throughout. As the field turned for home, the favourite faded out of contention, leaving just one rival between Agathon and a second consecutive victory.
In a thrilling finish, Agathon dug deep and rallied strongly, but the front-runner refused to yield. After a head-bobbing battle to the line, our brave runner was agonisingly denied by a nose—another second place to add to a growing list of near-misses for the club.
As owners gathered to hear David Allan’s post-race debrief, drama unfolded with a stewards’ inquiry announced due to interference in the final stages. After a tense wait, the officials ruled that the result would stand. While disappointing, the decision does not overshadow another outstanding effort from Agathon, who ran with heart and class under a 5lb penalty.
Full credit goes to Rebecca Menzies and her team, whose expert handling has seen Agathon return from injury in top form. His recent performances suggest he’s ready for a step up in class, and the future looks bright for this talented gelding.
We’re proud of the continued progress and fighting spirit Agathon is showing, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on his next target.
