Why This Horse?
Substance is a horse we are particularly excited to have brought into the Ursa Major Racing team. He is a well-bred, lightly raced three-year-old who has already shown a significant level of ability and, importantly, has plenty of room for further improvement.
He was originally purchased by Stonestreet Stables for £85,000 as a yearling, having been offered through Yeomanstown Stud's October Yearling Sale. That gives us a strong indication of the regard in which he was held as a youngster.
His early career with Joseph O'Brien was a little stop-start. He had four starts in 2025 and initially struggled to show his best, finishing tenth at the Curragh and sixth at Listowel. However, things began to click in 2026. After finishing fourth at Sligo, he was stepped into handicap company at Roscommon and produced a completely different performance.
Racing from a mark of just 68, Substance came from well off the pace to win the 7½f handicap by four lengths, with IrishRacing describing it as a decisive performance and highlighting the way he made steady progress through the field before hitting the front inside the final 150 yards.
That performance is what really caught our attention. There is clearly a horse in there, and we believe a change of scenery, a new training regime and further physical development could unlock another level.
🏇 Racing Profile
Substance has been lightly raced and has already shown that he is capable of improving significantly when conditions and circumstances are right.
His juvenile campaign consisted of four runs. He made his debut over 6f at the Curragh, finishing tenth of 19, before stepping up to a mile at Listowel where he finished sixth on heavy ground. He returned from a lengthy break in May 2026, finishing fourth at Sligo over just over 6f.
The breakthrough came at Roscommon on 11 May 2026. Making his first start in handicap company from an opening mark of 68, he was held up well off the pace but travelled into contention before staying on strongly to win by four lengths.
He then went to the Curragh off a revised mark of 78 and finished tenth of 13 over 7f before running at Fairyhouse in June. At Fairyhouse he finished third, beaten around 1¼ lengths, after travelling midfield and making good headway against the far rail before having no extra inside the final furlong.
The form therefore tells an interesting story. He has not been a straightforward horse so far, but his Roscommon victory showed what he is capable of when everything falls into place. There is plenty of scope for the new team to find the key to him.
🏠 Training
Substance arrives with plenty of racing experience behind him but is still a horse we feel has more to give.
His previous career suggests that confidence and finding the right conditions are important. His best performance to date came when settling off a strong pace at Roscommon and finishing his race strongly, suggesting that he may benefit from being ridden with patience and allowed to use his stamina late.
Now joining Mark Walford, the aim is to give him the time and environment to develop. He is still only three and has relatively few races under his belt, so there is no reason to believe we have seen the finished article.
A change of trainer can often bring about a change in a horse, and we are particularly interested to see how Substance responds to Mark's training methods. His Roscommon performance gives us a very good starting point, and the job now is to build on that ability rather than trying to reinvent him.
🧬 Pedigree Highlights
Substance is by Supremacy, a high-class son of Mehmas who was one of the leading two-year-olds of his generation. Supremacy won the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes as a juvenile and was also a high-class performer over sprinting distances.
His dam is Miranda Frost, by Cape Cross, giving Substance a pedigree that combines the speed of Supremacy with the proven stamina and class associated with Cape Cross.
Cape Cross was himself a multiple Group 1 winner and became a hugely influential stallion, most famously as the sire of Sea The Stars. His influence adds another layer of quality to Substance's female side.
The combination is particularly interesting because Substance has already shown that he can perform over distances from 6f through to a mile. His Roscommon victory over 7½f also suggested that there is plenty of substance to his racing — he was able to settle, travel and finish his race strongly.
He therefore has the pedigree to provide both speed and enough stamina to progress up the distances, giving Mark Walford plenty of options as he develops.

This is where Substance becomes particularly exciting for us.
He is a horse who has already shown a glimpse of what he can do, but his form figures do not necessarily tell the full story. The four-length victory at Roscommon was a performance that suggested he was better than his original mark of 68, and his subsequent third at Fairyhouse confirmed that the ability is still there.
Now with Mark Walford and Ursa Major Racing, we have the opportunity to give him a fresh start and see what he can become.
He is still only three, has relatively low mileage and comes from a pedigree that should allow him to progress. Finding the right trip, ground and racing conditions will be key, but we believe there is plenty of room for improvement.
For us, Substance represents exactly what we look for — a horse with a good pedigree, proven ability, plenty of upside and the potential to improve beyond what the form book currently suggests.
