Ursa Major Racing Blog – Runner Updates, Setbacks & Summer Plans

It’s been a busy spell for the team at Ursa Major Racing, with two recent runners on the track, two more in action this evening, and some unfortunate news in between. Here's a round-up of all the latest developments.

Tarlac Continues His Progress

First up was Tarlac, who lined up at Hamilton on Sunday in a competitive six-runner handicap. Settled in nicely behind the leaders, he was switched out wide and stayed on strongly to finish a very pleasing second place. He continues to progress with each outing, and much credit must go to trainer Katie Scott for the excellent work she’s done in bringing him along.

Ashington Fades Late at Kelso

Next came our ever-popular stalwart Ashington, who returned to Kelso where he ran alongside stablemate Magic Wave for much of the race. Travelling nicely, he gave his owners plenty of hope as they turned for home. However, he didn’t quite jump with his usual fluency at the third last, and when jockey Brian Hughes asked for more, there was nothing left in the tank. We suspect the race may have come a bit soon after his last run. The positive news is that he’s come out of the race well, and we’ll now take our time to formulate a plan to get him back on song.

Injury Blow for Punxsutawney Phil

Unfortunately, Wednesday brought some tough news for the connections of Punxsutawney Phil. Our racing manager Craig had the difficult job of informing owners that Phil has suffered a small tendon injury. The issue was thankfully spotted early by Mark and the veterinary team, and he was immediately assessed. The prognosis is positive, and we’re optimistic he can return to racing following a structured rehab programme. For now, his welfare is our top priority, and he’ll enjoy a well-earned rest. While disappointing, Phil owes us absolutely nothing, and we look forward to seeing him back in action in due course.

Two Runners Today – Fingers Crossed

Tonight sees a busy evening with two runners just five minutes apart:

  • Bay Dream Believer runs at Ripon (8.05pm) and is currently 5/1. Although drawn wider than ideal, he’s a previous course winner – a real plus at Ripon where some horses never take to the unique track.

  • Beltane heads to Nottingham (8.10pm) and is priced around 100/30. Both horses have been knocking on the door in recent runs and deserve a bit of luck. With the heart and determination they show, we’re hopeful of bold performances from both.

Plenty Going On Behind the Scenes

There’s been a lot happening at Ursa Major Racing beyond the track, too. We’re excited to be launching our merchandise shop very soon, so keep an eye out for that! Plus, with summer racing ramping up, we’ll be returning to daily blog updates, bringing you all the latest news, insights, and behind-the-scenes content.

As always, stay connected with us on social media for real-time updates, race previews, and more.

Thank you for your continued support, and here’s to a successful summer ahead!
